Abstract:

Contains manuscript and typescripts of various drafts of Norman Clyde's narratives, in his own hand, about his climbing activities in the Sierra Nevada mountain range, as well as mountains in Arizona, the Canadian Rockies, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, Southern California, Washington, numerous national parks, and Mexico. Narratives include stories and articles about specific peaks, climbs, first ascents, skiing, fishing, rescues, wildlife and rambling adventures in the Sierra Nevadas starting in 1914. Also contains correspondence regarding the effort to publish a biography of Clyde's life, with the assistance of Patricia Adler [i.e. Patricia Ingram]. Correspondence includes 87 handwritten letters from Clyde to Patricia Adler (79 letters), Walt Wheelock (6 letters), and Graham Stephenson (2 letters), dated from 1960 to 1969. The subject matter of these letters relate to Clyde's attempt to get material ready for a proposed book about his life to be published by Prentice Hall and the difficulties he experienced doing that task as well as discussions about the proposed organization of the material for the book. Several letters mention personal vignettes of his life in the Sierra during his various temporary Sierra homes during the time of the correspondence. All materials are a mixture of original and photocopies of originals. Also contains some miscellaneous material relating to his mountain rambles from 1914 to 1944, biographical material on Clyde collected by Adler, 3 undated letters to Adler, and three handwritten short manuscripts regarding his adventures in 1915-1918 and 1923. Includes three 8 x 10 black and white portrait photographs of Norman in hiking gear and two color slides of unidentified mountains.
